Contemplation And Meditation

As I think about my life over the last two years, I realize how much different I am as a person today. I am a much better human being and more at peace. I owe this improvement to contemplation and meditation. Beginning a daily habit of taking time for myself and learning about meditation is one of the best things I have done.

“I am daily making myself what I am.”

~Robert Thurman

Meditation And Contemplation Are Kindred Souls

Contemplation and meditation are different but also closely related. Contemplation means focusing your mind on a specific subject or object. For example, the beauty of a tree in autumn or a feeling you had about an event. Meditation is keeping the mind blank; being aware of your being or essence.

In a meditative state, your mind is free to accept feelings, images, and ideas; the art of observation without thought. Meditation takes much practice, and it can be difficult to master even in a lifetime. On the other hand, contemplation is easier, and you might want to start with it. They are both ways to look at ourselves and others in a relaxed spirituality. There is no time like today to get started.

Contemplation

To begin contemplation, find a place where you will not be interrupted for 10 to 30 minutes. Get comfortable and relax all your muscles. Start with focusing your thoughts on yourself. Ask yourself; who you are at this moment. Get to know yourself; what is your identity? Are you content with who you are, or do you need a change? Is there anything holding you back? The point is to remove the masks and false images you show the world, bringing out your true self.

We have all built up layers of defenses. Contemplation and meditation will help you remove these layers and get a true understanding of who you are. Spending time daily on yourself will not only help you to relax but is engaging your creative mind and connecting you to the universe.

Meditation

Meditation is more difficult, but it stops the deluge of thoughts that normally invade our minds. At first, you might only be able to stop these thoughts for a minute or two; soon, you notice one creep back in. We all have so much going on in our lives that it is hard to block unwanted thoughts for a long time. Meditation can help you achieve this.

Begin with 20 minutes of meditation. Sit or lie comfortably, and make sure you do not fall asleep. Close your eyes and begin long, slow, deep breaths. Focus your mind on your breathing. Relax all your muscles starting with the face and jaws and working down through your body. Tell yourself you are in a beautiful, peaceful place.

Let Them Float Away

As scattered thoughts in your mind, let them float away. I picture placing them in a bubble over my head and watching them float away pop and vanish. Be mindful of the moment. Listen to the sounds around you and connect to the moment. Enjoy the feelings of peace and joy. Be aware of your feelings, emotions, and thoughts that are here are with you right now; this is mindfulness.

Meditation frees our minds to go anywhere and gives us clarity. It can help answer a question you have or give you an idea for your next venture. These clarifying thoughts can only be reached in a relaxed meditative state and by focusing on the now.

“In us, there is a river of feelings, in which every drop of water is a different feeling, and each feeling relies on all the others for its existence. To observe it, we just sit on the bank of the river and identify each feeling as it surfaces, flows by, and disappears.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Still Learning

Contemplation and meditation are different yet share a kindred soul. They are a way to improve your health, both mentally and physically. Learning to spend time daily on me has changed me for the better. Even though I have a long way to go, I am learning and growing as each moment passes by. If you decide to try it, if nothing else, you might find that just getting into a relaxed state every day will do wonders for your body and mind.

Thank you for reading and following my blog. Let me know in the comments if you receive any benefits from contemplation and meditation. I appreciate each one of you.

Gaining Control Of Your Life

I missed posting an article last Sunday. This is the first time I have missed posting since I was in the hospital in February. Even when I travel, I have been able to schedule my posts ahead of time. I don’t have an excuse for not posting. I just didn’t have it in me, and when I sat down to write, my mind was blank. Today I want to talk about what happened (or didn’t happen) and gaining control of your life.

Gaining Control

Last week, I felt like my connection was off. There was just something missing, and I cannot explain it. That was last week. Today is a new day and the beginning of something big! One thing I know about not feeling connected is that it is only disconnected on my side. God/The Universe is always there and is always connected.

To begin gaining control of your life, you must realize you have full control to reconnect your mind. For example, take the electricity to your house. A lamp might not work because the plug came loose. The electricity is still flowing, but the connection has been broken. Plug the lamp back in and the connection is complete. The lamp works once more.

What Went Wrong?

Now that you know you have full control of your life, you just have to figure out what happened to your connection. For me, it could be that I was exposed to too much negativity through the media or other people. Possibly, I spent too much time away from my morning routine and broke the connection. Maybe I didn’t read enough or at all.

Negativity

Negativity is everywhere and impossible to escape for me. I continue to work on handing it better and quickly turning back to what is important to me.

Meditation and Prayer

My morning routine is important. I believe that it is responsible for the positive changes I have made in my life. It is why my relationships with my family have improved; why I am a better husband and father. Also, why I am a better person overall.

Reading

Reading is also a major factor in my life. It also has brought about positive changes in me. The knowledge I acquired by reading helps solidify my beliefs. It also teaches me new techniques. The books I read provide me with different ways of looking at my life which helps me grow.

Traveling

Getting away from my routine and reading frequently happens when I travel. Time away from everything is wonderful. I love traveling with my family and see new places. Sometimes we revisit old places and reconnect. It is great to put everything down once in a while and do nothing. It makes me feel energized and refreshed.

Continue Positive Habits

When traveling, it is important to continue with your positive habits. For myself, I will do a better job of taking time every morning to connect and stay focused even when we are on the road. It is like staying healthy. It is better to live a healthy lifestyle every day than to try to start over again and again. That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy unhealthy food or skip my workouts once in a while. I just do them in moderation.

After all, life is supposed to be live to the fullest. Enjoy every moment of it. It flies by all too quickly. Only don’t forget about the habits that you have developed. Incorporate them into your life when you are home and away. Keep working on gaining control of your life.

Self-Love Meditations And Affirmations

Several months ago when I started my blog I wrote a post titled, It’s Not About Me, It’s About You. The purpose of that post was to say that to become successful we need to serve others. Some people need the gifts that you have. People need to read the content that you’re writing. It might make them smile, be the bit of inspiration they’re looking for, or provides some information that helps them out. Taking your eyes off yourself and helping others will help you persevere. People are counting on you. You will need self-love meditations and affirmations can help you accomplish this.

Self-Love

Now I’m going to switch it up a little bit. I want you to put your eyes back on yourself. The reason for this is, you can’t fully serve someone else if you don’t completely like the person you are. Your priority is to fix yourself and be happy with who you are. I believe we are all good people deep down inside. We are all different people so don’t compare yourself with others. There is no comparison to you.

How many of you have watched a commercial and wanted to be like the “perfect” people in the ad? Advertisers use these “perfect” people because they want you to compare yourself with them. By doing so you feel inferior and want to do something about it. Therefore, you spend money on their products to become the person in the advertisement. That’s just not going to happen.

Don’t Compare

You can’t compare yourself with anyone because you are unique. Take a moment and look at your fingerprints. No one has the same fingerprints as you. Even though there are 7.8 billion people in the world, no two people have the same fingerprints. Our bodies are made up of DNA and these genetic markers are responsible for you looking the way you do. Our DNA comes from the beginning of time. Your unique DNA is a mixture of everyone in your bloodline. According to my DNA results, I am 1.64% Nigerian. This comes from one of my ancestors who lived approximately 50,000 years ago.

I was one of those people who always compared himself to others and wanted to be one of these “perfect” people. I never liked my body type even when I was in perfect shape. My looks were something I always wanted to change despite the compliments that I was given. One of the things that I despised was my voice. I put off starting a podcast for this very same reason. The other day I had a fellow blogger comment that she enjoyed listening to my voice on my podcasts. We just don’t see ourselves or hear ourselves as others do.

Look In The Mirror

Today, go ahead and look in the mirror because I want you to fall in love with the person that you see. The person looking back at you is the “perfect” person because they are the best they can be at that time. You can’t fully serve others or attract others if you don’t like the person that you are. Once you begin to love yourself, you will begin to attract more people to you. There is an old saying, “If you want to fix the world, begin by fixing you.”

You are a beautiful person just the way you are today. You are all created for greatness no matter your size, facial features, or your muscle tone. If you want to change something about yourself to better your health, give you more confidence, or whatever reason, I say just go do it. But first, fall in love with the original you. If you’re not in love with the way you were created, you will always be looking for flaws. When you fix one thing another flaw will come to your attention. You will always be chasing perfection because you never loved the original you.

Meditations And Affirmations

So how can you begin to love the person that you are right now, today? Well, your perception of who you are today is based on your words and thoughts of the past. Since the invention of television, we have been subjected to years of being told we are inferior. So you have to change those thoughts in the way you see yourself. Start today by looking in the mirror and telling yourself, “I love you.” Here are some self-love meditations and positive affirmations to help you.

1 I love myself

2 I am joyous, happy, and free

3 I am my own person

4 I am totally healthy

5 I am willing to release the thoughts in me that created these conditions

6 I deserve the best and accept it now

7 I am in the process of positive change

8 I appreciate everything that I do

9 I approve of myself the way that I am

10 I experience love and kindness wherever I go
