Enjoy The Process

In all endeavors, there is a process to get from point A to point B. Learning to walk is a process, so was taking a vacation. You have to pack, get to the airport, go through security, board the plane, arrive at your vacation spot, and God forbid, don’t forget anything. Whatever you’re trying to improve in your life, please enjoy the process.

Learn To Enjoy The Process

In the past, I didn’t enjoy the process of anything. The process of going on vacation was such a hassle it diminished the fun of the first few days for me. In contrast, today, I have learned to love the process as much or more than the result.

Last week, I was gifted an excellent example of what I am talking about. The Mrs. and I were at the Driving Range hitting golf balls. We recently took up the game, and neither of us is good at it. As we were hitting, and the balls were going wherever they wanted to, I heard behind me a distinct word beginning with a F***. Turning around, I saw a man swing, hit the ball, and immediately shout F***! He didn’t look like he was having a good time.

Fore!!

Sofia and I would swing, hit the ball, analyze what we did wrong, and rejoice when we hit it well. We understand to become good at something is a process. It might take 10,000 swings before we hit the ball consistently well.

It is important for us to play well, so we signed up for a lesson with a professional. Within five swings, I hit the ball straighter, farther, and with more consistency. It is all a process. Soon we will be able to drive around a course and enjoy the game with friends.

Enjoying The Process Of Writing

I have finished the first draft of Chapter 1 of my book; yea me! I enjoy the process of writing. Opening up my creativity and coming up with the story brings me joy. Once I begin, I don’t want to stop, but it is hard to walk after sitting for hours writing. I should get a timer and move around every twenty minutes or so.

I am not focused on the end result of my novel or golf game. The only thoughts, and more importantly, feelings I have, are about the joy of the process. Feeling happy while I’m in the process increases my vibration and attracts more ideas. It is how I open up my creativity. Before I pick up my pen, I like to meditate and open myself up, getting the creative juices flowing.

Enjoy Getting Healthy

Most people who want to get healthy don’t enjoy the process; I know I never did. They are just like me and want to skip the monotonous, exhausting process of changing their diet and exercise. Like me, they want to skip all that and get to the results. They suffer through it, but that is the wrong approach.

For example, my daughter Nicole is training for a fitness competition in June. Every morning she eats plain oatmeal, cinnamon, and an egg white. In support of her, I am eating the same. It is tasteless gruel, and we complain to each other and suffer. I realized that was only attracting negativity. We started looking at the meal not as gruel but as a healthy meal that will help her win. It is part of the process of changing our bodies, and we enjoy it.

How Do You View Situations?

It is all how you look at things. Focus on enjoying the process, and the results will come. I hope and pray everyone is well. I appreciate every one of you who takes the time to visit my site and read my posts.

Sign Your Name To It

My mother always told me, “Scott, if you’re going to do something, do it right.” Those words left an impression on me. What she meant was, whatever you choose to do, do it to the best of your ability. You don’t have to be perfect at it, but you have to give it 100%. In other words, sign your name to it.

Get A Printable and An Editable Planner For Free. The Planner Includes A Gratitude Pad And Journaling Pages. Also A 12 Month Fillable Calendar.

Sign Your Name To It

Sign your name to it is something I have always told my children. I didn’t care what they wanted to do with their life, as long as they did it to the best of their ability. When they wanted to play sports, I told them to strive to be the best player they could be. Don’t just be on the team and wear the uniform; give it 100% and contribute to helping the team win.

Some people are genetically superior athletes, and they tend to play professional sports. If you didn’t inherit those genes, it doesn’t matter how hard you train; they will always be better. Deciding to become a professional athlete would mean you would have to train much harder than them. You would have to be the best you; if you wanted to make the team.

The Gym

I go to the gym every morning and see people who train incredibly hard. They are there every day, and I call them gym rats. In contrast, I see people that can barely walk on the treadmill at a slow pace. The ones that train hard are in great shape and have little body fat. The others, not so much. For them to transform their bodies, they must change their habits and lifestyle.

If you want to become a healthier person and decide you need to do more exercise, the gym is a great place to start. Mentally you have to think of yourself as a gym rat, even if you do not look like one. It is more important to be at the gym daily than it is to spend a lot of time there. Your workouts periods will increase as you get in better shape.

Sign Your Name To It With Consistency

It is a process that starts with showing up. Develop a weekly training plan and reward yourself for sticking to it. You do not have to keep up with the gym rats, but you have to be there. Work out the best you can for that given day. It does not always have to be great but at the end of your workout, sign your name to it.

Deciding to make a change for your personal development is half the battle. Commitment is what it takes to win the battle. It comes down to being a professional or an amateur. Professionals show up every day even when they do not feel like it; amateurs don’t. Professionals embrace practice and failure; amateurs do not.

Is Motivation Enough?

In an earlier post, I wrote about the difference between motivation and self-discipline. It is hard to be motivated every day to eat healthily, go to the gym, write, etc. A professional does not need the motivation to do the things they are supposed to do. They have developed the self-discipline to do the right things every day. They sign their name to their daily habits. An amateur goes to the gym only when they are feeling well. Any little ache or pain becomes a rationalization or excuse not to go.

Writing

Writers write daily. They do not always write 2000 words a day, but they write. It is only through this consistent effort that they meet their publishing deadlines. I have recently dove into the world of writing a novel. It is a daunting task. Developing the daily habits of writing and researching will be the only way I will complete it. I keep telling myself to sign your name to it; every day that I write.

Also, I have incorporated the idea of becoming a professional in my golf game. No, I do not have any delusions of making money playing golf. It is not an easy game to learn and requires self-discipline. By being self-disciplined, I work on my swing every day. Some days, I will swing 100 times, and then there are days when I only take ten swings. It is about doing the best I can on any given day and doing it consistently.

Do you have any part of your life you are trying to improve? Are you trying to learn a different skill? If so, enjoy the process. Work on it daily and forget about the results. The results will come; you have to practice delayed gratification. Do the best you can no matter how you feel and develop self-discipline. Most importantly, sign your name to it.

The Process Of Personal Development

When I first started learning about personal development I thought that I had to change immediately. I would listen to a speaker or a mentor who would tell me what I needed to do. Next, I would try to do everything they said right away. This meant dumping all of my old habits and becoming a new person overnight. Eventually, the result was a failure. I didn’t realize personal development is a process; the keyword is development. Change must be developed. The process of personal development takes time.

Personal Development Is A Process

Once I realized personal development was a process it took a lot of pressure off of me. I gave myself time to develop good habits and replace my old ones. As time went by, I began to notice little differences in my life. I was in the process of personal development. Consequently, I began to feel better about myself and became more confident. Below are 10 steps I took in the process of my personal development.

  1. The Decision.
  2. Commitment.
  3. Write an Action Statement.
  4. Set Goals.
  5. Write a plan.
  6. Time Management.
  7. Positive Affirmations.
  8. Thought Control.
  9. Belief.
  10. Faith.

Begin Your Development

You begin with your decision to change. There are many different reasons why people decide to change their lifestyle. You might have realized that your habits are leading you down a path of destruction. Deciding to develop healthier habits will lead you to a happier lifestyle.

Unfortunately just making a decision is not enough. Most people who begin the process of personal development fail. The main reason is they didn’t commit. 75% of your success will be due to your commitment to your decision. Commitment means you will give your personal development time. You will not quit when you hit your first obstacle.

Your Statement

Writing an action statement is a key component in the process. First, write down what you are going to do. Second, why do you want to do it? Your WHY is a key element. Third, what are you going to give up, sleep, TV, social media, etc? No one gets something for nothing. Finally, when do you want it? Set a realistic date of when you want to obtain your desire.

Goals

Set goals and write them down. Make sure you have long-term goals, intermediate goals, and short-term or weekly goals. Your goals will keep you on track and you can monitor your progress. Write a plan on how you’re going to accomplish your goals. Don’t worry about the details. Your goals will lead you to discover how to accomplish them.

Manage your time. You have 1440 minutes every day. Set aside some time daily, once in the morning and once before you go to sleep, for you. Use this time to relax, journal, meditate and speak your action statement out loud.

process-personal-development-man-sign-better-days
https://unsplash.com/@letienhoang199x

Verbalize

Speak positive affirmations every day. Write down several affirmations that are tailored to you and the person you want to become. Speak these out loud as many times as you can a day. Visualization and verbalization are important in the process of personal development. Through these techniques, you will change your paradigm.

Thought Control

Begin to control your thoughts. Your brain is putting out thoughts constantly, both positive and negative. Pay attention to your thoughts and change any negative thought to a positive one. Your thoughts will become your reality. See yourself as the person you want to become in the future. When you’re visualizing your future life make sure that it feels normal to you.

Belief

As you go through the process of personal development you will begin to develop belief. In the beginning, you might not believe that you can change. As you continue to go through the process your belief will become stronger. The more you speak your positive affirmations and visualize your future as if it is now the greater your belief will become.

Finally, Faith

Ultimately, your belief will turn into faith. Faith is the final step in the process because once you have faith you can never be stopped. If you experience failure, faith will help you begin again. Obstacles will become smaller and just a nuisance. Once you develop faith you will feel a calmness because you know you will succeed. It’s just a matter of time.

When you make your decision to change remember that personal development is a process. This process doesn’t happen immediately but occurs over time. Commit to your decision and you will begin to see positive changes in your personal development. Eventually, you will succeed and become the person you are meant to be.

Episode 28 How To Overcome Self-Doubt

I’ve talked about this in several previous articles and want to discuss it more thoroughly today. I’m talking about those little creatures that hide deep inside our minds. The ones that pop up at the worst of times. Their only function is to prevent you from living the life you so richly deserve. Yes, I am talking about those dreaded “Doubt Demons!” They are there, dug in deep and camouflaged, waiting for the right time to come out. It is imperative to stifle these demons. If at all possible, they should be eradicated.

Take Control Of Your Life! My Courses Give You What You Need.

Like all demons, they are created by fear. They are particularly active right after you make a decision to change yourself for the better. Have you ever tried to lose weight and began to get cravings for unhealthy foods? Doubt Demons. If you’ve ever attempted to get a promotion, you might have started noticing the quality of the other candidates. You begin to compare yourself with them and believe that they are better. Doubt Demons. Did you start a business for financial freedom? After you made that decision were you engulfed in fear, asking yourself, “how will I pay the bills?” Doubt Demons.

Where They Come From

Any thought you have that fills you with fear is placed there by the Doubt Demons. Where do they come from? Unfortunately, these Doubt Demons can be given life inadvertently. When we are young and our thoughts are forming, we are very vulnerable. Many times our Doubt Demons are placed into our subconscious mind by adults who don’t realize the harm they are doing. Often your parents, teachers, etc. have tried to protect you from disappointment. They say things like, “he’s just shy,” “she’s not a good test taker,” or “it takes money to make money.”

Statements

Any statement such as the ones above gives life to these Doubt Demons. Imagine what will happen if you want to ask out the girl of your dreams but you been told that you are shy. You want to go to the college of your choice but are “not a good test taker.” Doubt Demons are not exclusively given life just when we’re young. They can also be placed in us as adults by our coworkers and friends. Have you ever told a friend about a big dream? If their response was less than enthusiastic, it gave life to your Doubt Demons.

Do you want some tips and techniques to control your Doubt Demons? Listen to my podcast above, Episode 28 How To Overcome Self-Doubt.

Properly Setting Goals For 2021

For December, my weekly posts are about wrapping up 2020 and getting ready for 2021. Last week I wrote a post about five things to change in 2021. December is a great month to ask yourself, “Am I where I thought I would be this time last year?” If your answer is, “No,” then now is a great time to see what went wrong. Think about where you want to be a year from now and what you want to accomplish. Today is the time to start properly setting goals for 2021.

Pre-Order Setting Goals That Work!

Properly Setting Goals For 2021

I’ve written a few posts about goals and as always, I like to keep things simple. Goals are simply something that you want. Think about what you want, write it down, put a date on it, and that’s a goal. They’re your roadmap that will keep you on track and get you to your destination.

Many people have goals but never accomplish them. There are several reasons for failing to accomplish what you set out to do. First, you fail because you don’t commit to achieving your goals. Secondly, you don’t have a good plan. Third, you don’t put in the work. There is nothing free in this world, you must put in the work. Fourth, you don’t know how to properly set goals.

Mistakes Made In Goal Setting

Some of the mistakes you make when setting goals are your goals are too general. They don’t have an end date for them. Your goals can’t be measured so you cannot tell if you’re on track. One of the biggest mistakes is you didn’t write them down. An example of a poorly designed goal is, “I have a goal to read more next year.” This is too general; it is not specified what you will read or how much.

SMART

One of the techniques I talk about in my course, Setting Goals That Work, is using the acronym SMART. In conducting research I found that some people like using this approach and others don’t. I believe there is no one cure for everything. Find what works for you and use it.

  • S – Specific
  • M – Measurable
  • A – Achievable
  • R – Relevant
  • T – Time Bounded

Using the example above, a properly set goal will read like this, “I will read 24 Self-Improvement books by 12/31/2021.

  • Specific – It specifies exactly what you’re going to read, Self-Improvement books.
  • Measurable – You’re going to read 24 books.
  • Achievable – If every book averages 400 pages then you would need to read 27 pages per day. This is very achievable.
  • Relevant – If you are looking for self-improvement, then this is a relevant goal.
  • Time Bounded – There is an end date, 12/31/2021, attached to the goal.

Break’em Down

You can also break this yearly goal into smaller goals. Write down how many books you would want to read every month. Set a weekly goal of how many pages or chapters you will read. Also, set daily goals of reading for a specific time or number of pages. This will keep you on track and you will be able to see how you are progressing toward your yearly goal.

Types

This SMART technique can be utilized in setting different types of goals. I always set three types of goals, personal, business, and relationship. You can set goals for wealth building, your health, and improving your relationships. By properly setting goals for 2021 in these areas, your life will change.

Plan

When your goals are set, the next step is to develop a plan to achieve your goals. Set up a time frame of when you want to check your progress and analyze your plan. For a yearly goal, you should do a progress check at least every quarter. If you find yourself off-track and not making the progress you expected, change your plan but never change your goal. If you want to learn more about properly setting goals for 2021, you can check out my course and preorder it above. The course will be published early in January.

Law Of Attraction Quotes

Who are you when no one is watching? They say that great people become great behind the scenes. Their greatness is made when no one is watching. These Law of Attraction quotes will help you to say and do the right things every day even when no one’s around. Understanding the Law of Attraction will significantly change your life.

A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks he becomes.
~ Gandhi

You can have, do or be anything you want.

Quotes on The Law Of Attraction

One of my favorite stories to illustrate this point is an interview with Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young. Steve said that the day after they won the Super Bowl he went to the stadium early in the morning to clean out his locker. He didn’t think anyone would be at the facility but as he was leaving he noticed some movement out on the field. He walked down to the field and looked out. To his disbelief, there was Jerry Rice, the Super Bowl MVP, running wind sprints. Most players took time off to recover from the grueling season and celebrate their championship. Not Jerry, he had already begun training for the next season by himself. That’s what made him one of the greatest players of all time.

We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all of the power we need inside ourselves already.
~ J. K. Rowling

Here’s the problem. Most people are thinking about what they don’t want, and they’re wondering why it shows up over and over again.
~ John Assaraf

Your Words

What are you saying to yourself when no one’s around? What thoughts go through your head? There’s a fine line between the words you’re saying and the thoughts that you are having. You must make sure that your thoughts and words are in alignment. Sometimes we say positive words but think the opposite. The Law of Attraction says that we will attract exactly what we are thinking about. Our words become our thoughts and our thoughts become our actions. It is through these actions that we acquire change.

Each of us speaks 20,000 words a day. Therefore, we must be speaking the right words. Have you ever listened to what you are saying? What is your response to someone who asks, “How are you?” Do you respond with how you are feeling or how you want to feel? Is your response negative or positive? A negative response is, “I’m not feeling very well, I think I’m coming down with something.” A positive response is, “I’m feeling good today.” I always have the same response no matter how I feel. My response is always, “Great!”

I am the master of my own destiny, so I choose greatness and nothing less.
~ Chiara Gizzi

Every thought we think is creating our future.
~ Louise L. Hay

Focus On The Future

When you say something, whether it be to someone or you just think it to yourself, always say what you want. Think about what you are saying and make sure that you are not inadvertently attracting something that you don’t want. Your words should not be based on your current situation but on how you want to be in the future. Analyze your words and make sure that you are not telling people what your current reality is. Tell them what your future reality will be.

It is very common when people began speaking positive affirmations that they focus on their current situation. Because we all have a lack of belief in the beginning, our thoughts will be different than the words we are speaking. You can be saying, “I am wealthy,” but as you are saying it you are thinking about all the bills that you have. Your predominant thought is of debt and not wealth. That is what you will attract. By consistently practicing positive affirmations every day you will eventually change your predominant thought to wealth. Your belief will grow as your thoughts come in line with your words.

The Law of Attraction states that whatever you focus on, think about, read about, and talk about intensely, you’re going to attract more of into your life.
~ Jack Canfield

You already have within you everything you need to turn your dreams into reality.
~ Wallace D. Wattles

The Law Of Attraction

The Law of Attraction simply states that you attract whatever it is you think. Our thoughts from the past have created our reality of today. Our thoughts today will create our reality in the future. I don’t like it when people who teach the Law of Attraction referred to it as “magical” or “woo woo.” There is nothing magical about it. You will not manifest piles of money just by saying and thinking you have piles of money. Your words and thoughts will lead to actions. Action = change.

If you want to change your situation you cannot do it through words or thoughts alone. Without action, nothing is gonna happen. It is through your actions that you will manifest your new reality. Your words and thoughts can lead you to meet someone who could change your life. But, if you don’t talk to that person or do what the person recommends, nothing will change. You have to put everything into action.

Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.
~ Willie Nelson

Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.
~ Albert Einstein

Alignment

So think about that question, “Who are you when no one’s watching?” People tend to say the right things in the right company. What are you saying when you are alone? What are you thinking throughout the day? Make sure that your words and your thoughts are in alignment. If not you could be inadvertently sabotaging your Law of Attraction. Once everything’s in alignment, make sure that you are putting in the work to become the person you want to be. Go out and get the lifestyle you want to have.

Look forward to where you want to be and spend no time complaining about where you are.
~ Esther Hicks

15 Quotes To Live A Simpler Lifestyle.

Why do we complicate everything? We tend to complicate all things, especially those that are important, relationships, creating wealth, or getting healthy, pretty much anything. These 15 quotes will inspire you to a more simple lifestyle.

My grandmother could simplify anything. First, if you went outside and it was cold, go put on a jacket; next, if you went outside and got wet, you might need a raincoat; finally, if you want a relationship to last, don’t go to bed angry. She didn’t need a weather channel to explain the exact temperature, the heat index, or the chill factor, she just knew if it was hot or cold outside.

“Stay low, stay quiet, keep it simple, don’t expect too much, enjoy what you have.”
― Dean Koontz

“When simple is more than enough, you will feel happy more than enough!”
― Mehmet Murat ildan

Simple and great times

When I got my first car, the combustible engine was a fairly simple device. You can perform maintenance on your vehicle fairly easily and even repair or replace certain parts.

Nowadays you need a computer to fix a vehicle. I can remember those hot, humid summer nights in my grandfather’s garage working on his old car. The crickets would serenade us as we tried to wipe the sweat out of our eyes with greasy hands. I’m sad that my children didn’t get to experience those simple moments.

“Life is as simple as these three questions: What do I want? Why do I want it? And, how will I achieve it?”
― Shannon L. Alder

“A simple life gives birth to more clarity, inner peace and meaningful relationships.”
― Margo Vader

Not Us But It Brings Back Great Memories

You have to keep it simple in the jungle

Everything nowadays seems so complicated that we need to break it down into its simplest form in order to understand it.

“My choice of a lighter lifestyle has brought me a greater sense of well-being. In a world that often seems stressful and chaotic, that’s a feeling I cherish.”
― Lisa J. Shultz, Lighter Living: Declutter. Organize. Simplify.

When I was in the jungle, I carried the explosives we used to destroy the cocaine labs. Trying to understand the scientific facts of how explosives work can be complicated. You could waste a lot of time looking at formulas and trying to figure out the best locations to place the dynamite and C4 to obtain the most destructive power.

“Don’t make your life complicated. Adapt to every circumstance.”
― Lailah Gifty Akita, Think Great: Be Great!

“Well, all I need is the air I breathe and a place to rest my head.”
― OneRepublic, OneRepublic: Dreaming Out Loud

Boom!!

We didn’t have a lot of time to do that, so I learned in my training that the simple fact is that the energy caused by the explosion will always travel along the path of least resistance. Simply put, if you wanted the explosion to travel in a certain direction, we just had to pile rocks and other heavy objects against the charge on the side opposite of the direction you wanted the explosion to travel.

You don’t have to complicate things in order to obtain great results.

“As he thought of it, though, he could not imagine what “just living” might actually be. He had never done it in his life. But he wanted to do it anyway.”
― Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game

Avoid “Paralysis by Analysis” by keeping it simple

“The simplest things are overlooked. And yet, it is the simplest things that are the most essential.”
― Thomas Lloyd Qualls, Painted Oxen

The character Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, when faced with a problem calls up his computer and several holographic computer screens appear in front of him. These screens are loaded down with a plethora of scientific data and it might take someone days to try to figure it out.

Tony Stark looks at all the data in front of him and immediately starts capturing a screen and swiping his hand to the side to eliminate it. He continues to do this until he is left with just one screen on which he finds a solution.

“I just want to live simply and pay attention to what’s happening each day.”
― Kent Haruf, Our Souls at Night

Break it down

He just simply broke everything down to its simplest form. That’s what we need to do to accomplish our goals, break down our plan to its simplest form. When we first start something, it can look so complicated that we don’t know where to start.

We then never commence to doing anything and our goal is left unfulfilled. This is called “Paralysis by Analysis.” We just get too much information, we over-analyze this information, and we never get started.

We never even take the first step. If you’re trying to do something and are frozen by fear or are having paralysis by analysis, break it down to its simplest form and just do it.

From complicated and frustrating to simple

“A simple life is not seeing how little we can get by with—that’s poverty—but how efficiently we can put first things first. . . . When you’re clear about your purpose and your priorities, you can painlessly discard whatever does not support these, whether it’s clutter in your cabinets or commitments on your calendar.”
― Victoria Moran, Lit From Within: Tending Your Soul For Lifelong Beauty

Here are some examples of how I break down different projects to their simplest form.

When I started my online businesses, I read books on different business opportunities and how to start them.

Then, I searched through YouTube for instructional videos and spoke with people who have started online businesses.

Do you get confused?

Quickly, I found out that there is an enormous amount of information on starting online businesses. Not everyone who creates an instructional video or writes a book agrees on how to be successful. I would watch one video and be told one thing, only to watch another video which contradicted everything I learned in the first video. Who could I trust? Did they really believe the information they were putting out, or were they snake oil salesman just trying to get my money.

This became overly complicated and filled me with anxiety so I began to break it down to its simplest form. If I wanted to succeed I had to ask myself the question, what do I need to do first?

I began and then moved on to what I needed to learn second and so on. I didn’t try to tackle everything in one day, I just did a little every day.

Another thing that I did to simplify everything was to pick just one mentor and learn from them.

My simplified exercise plan

“Escape from complicated life! Take refuge in simple life! You will find three treasures there: Healthy body, peaceful mind, and a life away from ambitious fools!”
― Mehmet Murat ildan

If you want to get healthy and have never exercised before, it can be very daunting to go to a gym and see all the different machines or take instruction from a personal trainer.

What I always tell people who want to start an exercise program is to do the simplest thing, start by walking. Walking is the simplest form of exercise, we do it every day, and it can be done anywhere.

The next step is to begin increasing your muscle tone by doing bodyweight exercises. You don’t need a gym to do these and they are a good way to build muscle prior to beginning weight training.

Push-ups are great exercises for building your upper body and hit a lot of different muscles. If you can’t do push-ups, try to do a push-up with your knees on the floor.

If you don’t have a lot of upper body strength yet, begin with incline push-ups or even stand up and do push-ups against the wall.

How we simplified weight loss in the “Good Ole Days”

In the past, whenever I needed to lose weight, I would see so many different weight loss books and diets that I would be overwhelmed. What I noticed about all the different weight loss programs out there is that they tell you to eat the same types of foods.

Simply put, if you want to drop some pounds, make sure your plate is mostly covered in vegetables.

On the most uncomplicated level food is made up of calories that provide us with energy. In order to drop some pounds, you must expend more calories than you take in. All the calories that you don’t expend will be stored as fat in your body.

Cut it in half

“He toasted his bacon on a fork and caught the drops of fat on his bread; then he put the rasher on his thick slice of bread, and cut off chunks with a clasp-knife, poured his tea into his saucer, and was happy.”
― D.H. Lawrence, Sons and Lovers

If you want to start losing weight, begin by only eating half your normal plate of food.

You can then start by replacing some of the food you are now eating with foods that are better for you. Remember that it is a marathon, not a sprint and you don’t have to lose all your weight in a short period of time.

The Murph Challenge

Back in February, I decided I wanted to increase my workouts and was looking for a challenge. My oldest daughter and I signed up for the Murph Challenge. The challenge consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one mile run while wearing a 20-pound vest.

This looked impossible to me at first and I didn’t know how I was going to train for it. I simplified it by making a plan to complete a fraction of the challenge twice a week and then build on that until the day of the challenge. I knew I could do that. On Memorial Day, May 25th, we took on and conquered the challenge to remember and honor my family, friends, and everyone that has paid the ultimate sacrifice. #Murphchallenge.

Keep It Simple

You can accomplish anything that you set your mind to as long as you don’t get paralysis by analysis and never get started. In the military, we are taught early on the K.I.S.S. principle. That’s Keep It Simple St***D. Break it down to its simplest form, do it, and build on it until you succeed.

Garbage Day

As I was on my morning walk this beautiful, wonderful day, I was reminded by the garbage cans on the street that today is garbage day. In my neighborhood, they pick up the garbage on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. I never put my cans out on Wednesday simply because we don’t accumulate enough garbage. This got me thinking that garbage day is a metaphor for our lives. We have so much negative garbage in our minds that we need to put it in a can, take it to the streets, and let somebody take it away. Most of my neighbors have so much garbage that they have to put out two cans twice a week. If you are having negative thoughts, you need to be taking them out to the street every day. Just like real garbage, I have very little negativity which is why I don’t have to take it out to the street very often.

Photo by Shane Rounce on Unsplash

I have replaced all my garbage with positive thoughts. If I have negative thoughts, or the Doubt Demons creep in, then I immediately throw them in the garbage and take them to the street. If I run into a negative person while I’m out and about, I immediately toss what they’re saying in the garbage and replace it with positive thoughts. You can play a little game with this and every time you have something negative in your life walk to the garbage can, lift up the lid, and toss the negative into the garbage can. Begin thinking positive thoughts and on garbage day, roll your can to the street and your negative will be taken away with your actual garbage.

Replacing negative with positive begins with you. You can change everything about you by replacing the way you’re thinking and what you’re saying. In my post “A Flying Rat’s Ass,” I talked about looking inward. When you look in the mirror, who do you see? When I look in the mirror I don’t see the physical me. I see what I looked like physically when I was 30, and yes I was one pretty man. Spiritually, I see the man that I will become. The words I speak and the thoughts I have are of the man that I will become before I see that man in the physical world. These are the words and the thoughts of a prosperous man who has been given everything he deserves. What words are you saying about yourself? Are you describing yourself as of today or the you that you will become?

You deserve everything in life. You are one-of-a-kind and can and will be whatever you desire to become.  The reason you don’t believe that you have it right now is because of the words you’re saying and the thoughts that are in your mind. In order to change, you have to look inside you. You have to look at the person who’s looking back at you in the mirror and say I deserve everything I’m asking for. This can all be explained by the Law of Attraction. You have something to give to the world and if you’re not happy, then you can’t give out that gift. A great exercise is to write down the things you do on a daily basis. These are your habits and habits can be changed. Write down what time you get up in the morning and what you do all throughout the day. Write down the good and the bad, all the way up until you go to bed. The next day read your list. These are all the things that got you to the point you are at today. If you’re not happy with that person or where you are in life, then you have to change some or maybe all of your habits. If you’re doing the same things over and over and over, you cannot expect different results. To be the person you deserve to be, change the person you are.

The words you’re saying and the thoughts that you are having are the determining factor in the life that you’re living. They are also determining the life you can be living in the future. Speak of what you want as if it’s already happened. See the person that you want to be as if that person already exists. What kind of car do they drive? What kind of house to they live in? The only way to take out the garbage in your mind is to replace it with positive words and thoughts. The more positive that you can put into your mind the less room there is for the negative.

The universe will give you whatever you ask for through your thoughts and your feelings. Ask for what you want, believe you have already received it, and the universe will provide it for you. Always ask for what you want, not for what you don’t want. Ask to weigh your perfect weight, not to lose weight. All your thoughts must be on the positive, not the negative. A thought such as, “I want to get out of debt,” sounds like it would be positive but you’re just reinforcing the fact that you have debt. Instead, just focus on the positive and think, “I have an unlimited income.” By repeating your positive words and thoughts constantly throughout the day you will be programming your mind to think of what you want instead of what you have.

Last week I wrote a blog called “Draft Day” in which I spoke about having gratitude. Nothing works if you don’t have gratitude and love in your heart. You can speak the most positive words and have the most positive thoughts thousands of times a day, but you won’t see results unless you can do that with feeling. You have to be thankful for everything that you have, positive and negative. If you want a better car, be thankful for the one that you have. If you want a better job, be thankful every day for the good and bad things about your current job. Before you begin repeating these positive words, take a moment to be thankful for what you have and think of something that makes you very happy. When you’re grateful and you can think these positive thoughts and really feel that they’re coming from your heart, everything that you’re asking for and speaking of will be given to you.

If you’ve read the book or watched the movie, The Secret (It’s on Netflix), then you will understand what I’m saying. If you haven’t read the book or watched the movie then I am encouraging you to do so. Everything that you read or see in the movie, I experience on a daily basis. I have unlimited income, from multiple sources that arrive daily. I have perfect health and wonderful, happy relationships with my family and friends. I could write a different post every day about receiving things that I have asked for from the universe. All you have to do is three things; Ask, Believe, and Receive. Ask for what you want. Believe that it is on its way and Receive it. If you feel that you deserve a better life or want more out of life then I encourage you to research this book. For your convenience, I have added the book, The Secret, to My Motivational Books List and you can click on the book or the hyperlinks to purchase them from Amazon.

Don’t forget that today is garbage day and dump all your negative thoughts and feelings into the can, roll it out to the street, and let the garbage company haul it away.

Don’t Water the Street: Creating the Right Mindset

Don’t water the street: creating the right mindset. Success is based on work. If you’re not willing to do the work you’re probably not going to have very good results. It all begins with your mind though; you have a thought about something that you would like to accomplish. You start off with a dream about being wealthy or losing weight and having a different body. How about living in a mansion instead of your studio apartment that’s worse than the apartment you lived in at college? Now that you have this dream; How are you going to go about turning it into a reality? If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll know that how is not really important. WHY is the most important part of the equation.

Don’t Water The Streets

This is where your thoughts come in. If your mindset is right and you’re thinking positive thoughts, then HOW to obtain your dreams will come to you. You will see an ad, or maybe bump into an old friend and they will give you inspiration. You might even overhear someone talking and it gets your mind thinking. Don’t worry, if you are thinking positive thoughts, you will know it when it happens.

This business started because I listened to a podcast that was recommended to me by a friend I hadn’t seen in 35 years. I didn’t know what a podcast was! Now is the time to take your seats because here comes Story-time. I wake every morning very early, way before the sun rises and after enjoying a talk with my Lord and Savior and spending some time in meditation, I exercise.

Sprinklers

At that time of the morning, several lawn sprinklers turn on in my neighborhood. I have one neighbor whose sprinklers are mostly facing the road. He even has one sprinkler that shoots from halfway in his yard all the way to the other side of the street. This sucker doesn’t even oscillate, it’s just a steady stream of water in one place. It caught my attention because I have to divert my path completely across the street to keep from getting soaked. The only grass that receives any nourishment is a thin strip, maybe six inches wide.

What do your DREAMS look like?

A Lush Lawn

Watching this guy’s sprinklers water the street got me thinking that this is just like bad thoughts. You will only be able to accomplish your dreams by thinking positive thoughts. Dreams, like grass, need to be nourished and watered. If your irrigation system is adjusted correctly then most of the water lands on your yard and nourishes your lawn. The grass grows healthy and full, chokes out all the weeds, and you have this lush green lawn that’s the envy of the neighborhood.

Feed Your Dreams

If you water your dreams with positive thoughts then they will grow, flourish, and choke out those pesky “Doubt Demons”. On the other hand, if you’re watering the street your lawn suffers and nothing grows. Grass does not grow on asphalt. If you’re constantly giving into negative thoughts you might as well be watering the street because nothing is going to grow.

Begin a daily habit of affirmations. Write them down on an index card and carry them with you always. Read them first thing in the morning, several times. Throughout the day pull out your index card and read them over and over. You need to program your positive thoughts into your subconscious.

Adjust Your Thoughts

Just like you adjust your sprinklers to only water the grass, adjust your positive thoughts to water your dreams. They say you have to do something 10,000 times before you get really good at it. I’m no scientist but maybe that’s how long it takes before your subconscious mind takes over and you start doing and saying the right things without thinking about it.

Good Times

Throughout my military and law enforcement career, we went through constant training. Whenever we would make an arrest or execute a search warrant, my actions were automatic. I don’t have a clear memory of what happened from the time after we arrived at the residence, up until the house was cleared or the person was in custody. In that time-space, I was operating with my subconscious mind and doing what I was trained to do without having to think about it with my conscious mind.

Operating In The Subconscious

One day my partner and I were taking a break at Starbucks and sitting outside when two people ran out of the store next to us. The owner ran out saying that he was robbed. My partner and I ran after them and after a little while, I realized I had my gun in my hand. I had no recollection of unholstering my weapon. The answer to your next question is, yes, we caught them. One of them became completely winded, gave up, and just laid down next to the street. The other one we found hiding under a house and wouldn’t come out, so we called out the K-9 unit. He crawled out and was completely cooperative once the dogs got there. Good times, good times.

No More

Alright everybody, no more watering the street. Start your affirmations, repeat those things you want in your life until they come true. This is the point where a lot of people sabotage themselves because it doesn’t happen quickly enough for them. Keep in mind this isn’t McDonald’s and you can’t order a new lifestyle, drive up and pick it up at the little window.

Give Your Dreams Time To Grow

Dreams take time and we are not in control of when they come true. You can’t see the grass seedlings when they’re under the soil and it’s usually at the point where they’re about to break through the soil that you get frustrated. You begin thinking and saying they will never grow and point the sprinkler back at the street. A lot of people get frustrated when they don’t see results and turn to negative thoughts and words. If they’d only kept the positive thoughts for one more day, one more week, or one more year their life could be radically changed.

Success

Do you have a time limit on your dreams? How long are you willing to wait to achieve the life that you want and deserve? Some people seem to have boatloads of success when they are children while others don’t have success until they are in their 60s and 70s. Some people graduate from college in three years, some in five or six (You can put me in the latter timeframe). Both of them still have the same diploma.

Success is success. If you’ve ever graduated from college, you might have put your dreams on hold for those four years. A lot of people take 4 plus years to get a college diploma but will give up on their dreams after a few months. If you create the right mindset and don’t put a time limit on it, the universe is at your fingertips and you can live your dream lifestyle.

The Journey

How do you complete a thousand-mile journey? You take the first step, just one step, and before you know it you’ve walked a thousand miles. How do you help a million people? You help one and that will multiply a million times. We have taken that first step on our journey we won’t stop until we’ve reached our destination wherever, whatever that may be. Once we reach that destination, we will pick another destination and begin a new journey. Once you understand how easy it is to become successful at one thing that you want, then you can become successful at everything. If you can be successful at losing weight then you can be successful in making money because it’s all the same principles. Enjoy the journey.

The most important part of the journey is the WHY. Why do you want to take this journey? You will hear me refer to the WHY many times because the WHY is what gets you to your destination. The HOW does not matter, it will be revealed to you once you know the WHY. I remember when I began training for the military and that it was definitely out of my comfort zone. I didn’t really know why I had volunteered, I was just pulled in that direction. I knew it was going to be physically and mentally difficult. It was peacetime so I didn’t have any visions of being a war hero. There was no certain rank that I desired to achieve. Heck, I wasn’t even inspired by Gomer Pyle, USMC (If you don’t know who that is, look him up. A very funny show). My WHY became my fear of failure. I was terrified of not making it, being one of the few who couldn’t cut it, and going home to face my family not worthy of wearing the uniform.

I didn’t know how I was going to make it through. I was just going to take it one day at a time. One of the first days that I was there, we were standing in formation and I was scared, homesick, and felt totally out of place. So I just looked to my right, looked to my left, and randomly picked out one of my fellow soldiers. I made a commitment to myself that if he made it, I was going to make it and that if he didn’t make it, I would pick out another person and say the same. I made the decision that day that I was going to make it to graduation. I then began using this technique for every difficult and challenging event in my life.

My first day at the U.S. Army Airborne School in Fort Benning, Georgia, I used this technique to make it through and earn my wings. I had to use this technique many times because we had such a high attrition rate. I would pick out a fellow soldier and say to myself if they make it, so will I, only to find out the next day they weren’t there. I would then repeat the process with another fellow soldier until I made my final graduation jump. The funny thing about jump school was I didn’t even know why I was there. One day I was in military science class in college and the major asked for volunteers for the airborne school. I really didn’t know what it entailed but I did know that it included jumping out of airplanes and I was scared of heights. I thought this would be a good thing for these other gung ho cadets in my class but my mama didn’t raise no fool. There’s no way I would ever do that. I counted eight hands raised and heard the major say, “Okay we’ve got nine volunteers.” I then realized that my hand was raised and I don’t remember making a conscious decision to raise it. It was too late now, I would look like a coward trying to take it back. I thought about faking an injury. Grabbing the back of my leg and yelling, “it’s a hammy, it’s a hammy!” Then came my way out, the major said that he only had eight slots so we would use the physical training test to decide who would go. All I had to do was make sure eight other guys did better than me on the test. Even I couldn’t screw this one up. When the day of the test came I still had no desire to jump out of an airplane but damn my competitive spirit, I scored one of the top eight scores and about a month later my dad was dropping me off to go learn how to fall out of an airplane.

the-journey-soldiers-jumping-out-airplane

I always wondered how my hand got raised that day and why I was doing these things. This has happened to me several times in my life where I ended up doing something that I have no idea how or why I was doing it. Several years later I realized that my hand was raised because airborne school was going to be essential in my journey. It provided me with the self-confidence to take on the challenges on my journey. Airborne school taught me that everyone has fears but you can control these fears. One part of training is the 250 foot tower. During this training, they harness you to a deployed parachute which is hooked to a large ring and haul you 250 feet in the air. The sergeant on the ground gives you commands and you have to acknowledge his commands by opening and closing your legs. Once you’ve acknowledged all of his commands the parachute is released from the ring and you float down and try to make a perfect landing without hurting yourself. I remember one soldier was at the top of the tower and the sergeant was giving him commands. The soldier didn’t open and close his legs and was frozen in fear. The soldier was then lowered to the ground and removed from training. That’s when the sergeant turned to the few of us that were sitting on the bench waiting their turn and gave me one of the greatest gifts of all. He said, “fear is normal, everyone has it but you must learn to control the fear.”

“You can conquer almost any fear if you will only make up your mind to do so. For remember, fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind.”
Dale Carnegie

Learning how to control my fears and getting out of my comfort zone has been part of my journey. It has led me to where I am today. Thinking about how are you going to do something will not control your fears. Only the WHY will give you the strength to control your fears and make it through your journey. When you decide to lose weight, you will go through some doubts and struggles on your journey. But make it your journey and enjoy every part of it because there’s a new you at the end. You might be afraid of going to a support meeting for the first time or joining a gym because you think everyone’s looking at you. I implore you to conquer your fears and not worry about other people. They are not on this journey with you. This is your journey and your journey only.

As I look back on my journey so far I can only smile. Thinking about the successes and the failures makes me happy. Everything I have gone through in my life has gotten me to this point today. Everything needed to happen for me to be the person that I am today. Enjoy your journey. Enjoy the good, the bad, and the ugly. When it’s all said and done you will have created the greatest masterpiece in the world and be proud to sign your name to it.

“This train is moving on, you can get on, you can get off, but the train keeps moving on!” We are going to the top of the mountain!”
